Client BriefSGB UK, the market leader in supplying scaffolding, access, temporary accommodation and formwork to the construction and other industries is committed to growth and improved operational performance. Following a recent restructuring, the desire is to drive this business growth through a “make it happen” ethos. We were therefore asked to design a leadership training intervention for the top 100 SGB managers.
Diagnosis, Design and DeliveryQualitative and quantitative data were gathered from a structured development needs analysis and employee opinion survey, in-depth discussions with board members and at an interactive seminar at the SGB Senior Manager Conference where electronic voting technology was used.
The resulting design was targeted to meet the needs of individuals and the wider business need. Both design and delivery is capitalising on the learning preferences of those attending.
Features of the project design included:• A 2 day residential Leadership Foundation Programme
• A series of 4 one-day Masterclasses
• A group project; topics provided by the board were based on critical business issues
• Separate Directors’ Workshop ensuring top-level understanding of, and support for, the programme.
• A follow-up email ‘Leadership Thought for the Day’ campaign
Success Criteria and EvaluationThe business made good use of existing metrics to evaluate success of the programme. The top 3 chosen in descending order of importance were better staff retention, better customer service and individuals taking more personal responsibility.
